FLEM Magaluf: A Celebration of Culture for Art, Music, and Literature
Designed in partnership with the vibrant bookstore and cultural space known as mouse cornerfestival, FLEM Magaluf Extended Literature becomes a living celebration of culture. It holds fast to its core purpose while elevating the experience for lovers of art, music, and literature alike. The event is a gathering that invites curiosity, conversation, and a shared passion for storytelling in all its forms.
The festival marked its return after a successful debut in 2021, continuing its tradition of immersive cultural programming. In 2022, FLEM reconvened in Magaluf, inviting attendees to a fall edition hosted at the INNSiDE hotel beside the Malgrats coastline on Meliá Calviá Beach. The setting blends modern hospitality with intimate literary encounters, creating a space where conversations flow as freely as the sea breeze.
From September 30 to October 2, FLEM 2022 brought together thirty participants for three days of talks, readings, and collaborative experiences. The lineup highlighted voices from both national and international cultural scenes, underscoring the festival’s commitment to broad conversation and diverse perspectives. One of the most anticipated moments was Chuck Palahniuk, the American novelist famed for Fight Club, who arrived for a featured presentation of his creative process and the candid, introspective work that accompanies the private memoir project Plantéate esto. This appearance provided attendees with a rare, direct window into a critically acclaimed author’s approach to craft and storytelling.
Elif Batuman, recognized for her acclaimed novels and a finalist position for the Pulitzer Prize, also took part as a special guest. She presented Random House Literature and her forthcoming work, The One or the Other, scheduled for release in October. Batuman’s appearance offered a thoughtful exploration of voice, identity, and the evolving landscape of contemporary literature as seen through her distinctive lens.
A further highlight was the presence of British writer and commentator Caitlin Moran. Moran’s body of work blends fiction, essays, and activism, often drawing on personal and social observation to examine what it means to be a woman in today’s world. Her latest work, More Than a Woman, delves into middle age and the existential questions that accompany it, all conveyed with Moran’s characteristic sharp wit and incisive perspective.
FLEM 2022 also showcased a broad roster of established and emerging talent. The poster line-up included prominent authors such as Ray Loriga, Marta Sanz, Sebastià Portell, Meryem El Mehdati, Anna Freixas, Pol Guasch, and Eugenia Tenenbaum. Journalists and writers Carlos del Amor and Jon Sistiaga contributed their perspectives, while illustrators Esther Gili, Amaia Arrazola, Carles God, and Nívola Uyá brought visual storytelling to the festival. The Red Room collective, featuring Joan Miquel Oliver, Abraham Boba, Miquel Serra, and Jorge Martí, contributed music and literature collaboration that enriched the overall program. Poets Elvira Sastre, Josep Pedrals, and Laura Sam joined, alongside Marina Garcia and the Espaguetti Monster from the Gente 2020 podcast, enriching the lyrical dimension of the festival. Cartoonist Flavita Banana served as the official historian for the event, guiding audiences through the festival’s evolving narrative. The breadth of participants reflected FLEM’s mission to fuse multiple artistic forms into a cohesive cultural experience that resonates with readers, listeners, and spectators alike.
