From January through May 2023, the Cervantes Theater in Petrer hosts a total of 17 performances as part of the municipality’s refreshed theater program, presented by Cultural Council Member Fernando Portillo. The program emphasizes a vibrant, locally rooted season that brings a diverse mix of productions to town, with a focus on accessibility and community engagement. Ticket pricing remains affordable to support family and youth attendance, while showcasing a broad slate of national and regional talent.

The new programming carries evident weight for the community and stands as a visible, forward-facing initiative. It draws on years of effort to deepen Petrer’s theater culture and keep the town a reference point for regional performing arts by offering a high-quality lineup at subsidized prices, making performances reachable for many families.

The Undersecretary highlighted that the introductions in the season are prime gifts for the Christmas period, noting that tickets are available for most shows on the City Council’s website starting Monday morning.

The new programming carries substantial local relevance while projecting a national reach. Seven of the 17 planned shows feature local artistic groups or include Petrer-based performers in the cast, underscoring the season’s community-centric emphasis.

“Spanish Air”

The 2023 Cervantes program opens on Sunday, January 15 with a particularly local production, Aire español, staged at the Dori Andreu Dance Studio. Cayetana Ferrández’s flamenco ensemble is also slated to perform at Cervantes on February 4 in a program titled Suite española.

On Saturday, January 21, the program features its first family-oriented moment with six performers in Pinocchio, presented by Onyric Theater. On Sunday, January 22, there is a playful tribute to Coco that signals the family-friendly spirit of the season. The children’s shows continue on February 5 with Trencadís presenting Alicia al musical de les meravelles, followed by a February 19 performance of The Story Machine by Caja de expresiones.

By Sunday, March 12, the lineup includes Encanto, produced by La Barbarie, which closes the children’s shows lineup with Das Pfeiffer, a lively blend of live music and clowning, featuring Petrer’s own Quique Montoya among the performers.

A highlight occurs on Saturday, February 11, when renowned performer Carles Sans from Tricicle takes the stage. While Tricicle disbanded as a group, its members continue to pursue solo projects that enrich the program’s contemporary appeal.

Portillo notes that this season blends nostalgia with fresh energy, inviting audiences to reconnect with live theatre in a dynamic, community-focused setting.

“Silence”

One of the season’s standout moments features Blanca Portillo in the stage production Silencio, scheduled for Thursday, February 25. The program also includes bold comedy pieces, with Miki Dkai delivering a sharp monologue on Thursday, February 16, and Alex O’Dogherty presenting a.k.a. Imbécile, midiendo las palabras, a show that mixes wit with social observation.

On Sunday, January 29, Taules Teatro from Pine, directed by local actor and Petrer native Begoña Tenés, presents Las buenas jersey with César Garijo in the cast, continuing the tradition of involving regional talent in the program.

Taules, the flagship of amateur theater

The season culminates with two productions from Cervantes under the banner Here I am Catching You, Here The Theater: Revolts on Saturday, March 11 and 7 years on Saturday, May 20. The lineup also brings Sense Barreres with The Perfect Crime on Sunday, April 23, and as a March highlight, Matriu by the company La Intensa.
