Teatre del Mediterrani presents a June to July program in Alicante
Antigone Under the Sand brings to life a bold adaptation of Sophocles text. Set after a civil conflict in Thebes, the city struggles to heal from the wounds of the past while new rules threaten the remnants of memory. When Creon decrees that the fallen must not be buried, the communities’ sorrow is kept from funeral rites and the cycle of grievance continues.
The central figure, Antigone, sister of the princes, challenges the decree by choosing to honor her brother with burial. Her act of defiance forces Creon to confront a moral dilemma: whether to enforce the law at all costs or to spare her life and restore a path to reconciliation. The drama explores duty versus authority, tradition versus justice, and the consequences that follow when power attempts to erase personal conscience.
The season continues on Wednesday, July 20 with the performance Couscous, a production from the ETC company based in Dénia. This piece fuses dramatic tension with comic elements, driven by Manuel’s imaginative naming of his soon to be born son, which drives a chaotic humor that sits at the heart of the play.
