During the filming of the documentary “Balabanov”. bell tower. Requiem, director Lyubov Arkus knew that Alexei Balabanov would die soon. He talked about it after a special cassette screening at the Oktyabr cinema center on 3 December.
“I knew a man was going to die, and I lamented his whole life. It was also very hard to believe that that person wouldn’t exist because I loved him. You understand this will happen, but it’s hard to believe. There was an unrealistic choice that a person would survive, and the movie was going to be about that,” Arkus said.
Work on the film began two years before Balabanov’s death as a chronicle of the making of his last film, I Want It Too. The director, who disliked giving interviews, allowed Arkus to film it at work and at home, and commented on the camera. The tape reveals the personality of Balabanov, his views on life and work. The last scene of life with the participation of Balabanov was shot in May 2013.
The director passed away on May 18, 2013 at the age of 54. The official cause of death was acute heart failure on the background of a serious chronic disease.
