Morgan: “We are pureblood natives, we managed everything ourselves”

Several Spanish bands garnered unanimous applause from critics and audiences, if any. morgan since the release of her first album North They’re back in 2016. They arrive at The One San Vicente tomorrow as part of a promotional tour of their latest work. river and stoneAnother twist on American rock. we talked to Paco Lopezz, guitarist From the Madrid group.

Even though Morgan’s first album was released in 2005, you are a ten-year-old band, what is the balance of this decade? positive?

Yeah yeah. It’s basically hard to believe. It is a dream come true for every musician who does this for the love of music, playing and playing with his friends without an excuse.

And in the best dreams have you ever seen yourself releasing albums, playing for thousands of people, and getting great reviews?

Never, ever, ever. We’ve all had different projects, we know it’s hard to calculate what impact your actions might have on people, and we’re slowly starting to confirm that not only are our friends coming to see us, but there are also unknown faces. We left Madrid and the people who listened to us also came, because someone told them that the whole process was a dream. Also, we love to play. We’ve had other groups that gave us the same pleasure and similar feelings, but for some reason they wouldn’t let us do what we did with this group.

the composition of this last album was between us all, making everything almost from scratch

If we take a still picture of the Spanish music scene, you get reggaeton, indie, commercials… you pop up out of nowhere and there’s a huge hunger for quality music among the happy public.

It’s true that that makes it even weirder because we never thought that what we’re doing would be popular anyway due to different factors, but what is it? The audience really shows you that everything has an audience, for indie plus pop or a little more mainstream or commercial, but there’s also an audience for that genre, maybe concerts that are a little more introverted, I can’t tell you, but of course there’s an audience we’re looking for. There is travel time. It’s like watching a movie, and you say to yourself: There’s a point that catches my attention and draws me into the story.

You have an audience that knows music, listens a lot and eagerly awaits offers like yours.

Yes, the feeling it gives me is that there are people our age 30, 40 or 50, or even older, and yes, the type of audience that is looking for something more comfortable.

Morgan, Paco, Nina, Ekain and David. INFORMATION

Wikipedia says you are an indie band.

Ha ha… indie, well, we paid for our first album, we didn’t sign with any label, we managed everything ourselves, we do something that a lot of people don’t. The truth is we purebred Indians ha ha. Not musically, but because of the way it originally suggested the group’s philosophy, the term was more coined, but eventually became more of a musical style.

How do you approach composition?

In the beginning Nina brought an idea, a melody and we worked on it, but on the last album we used everyone’s ideas, the composition of this last album was between us all, we were making almost everything from scratch.

What are your influences on the music of 60’s and 70’s North America?

Yes, it was the thing that impressed me the most as a kid, the thing I connected the most with, but the years pass and everything that has a little bit of substance. We appreciate new styles, but when it comes to playing it always leans towards that foundation I grew up with, the American rock of my life.

And the guitarists who stigmatized you?

Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top is driving me crazy or JJ Cale guitar hero looks like a genius to me.

Why is there always a Spanish song in your albums?

It’s not intentional, it turns out that way. This is Nina’s thing, from time to time something Spanish pops up.

The idea is to keep singing in English?

Yes, yes, but still more ideas are popping up in Spanish and it could be half or all of the next album, but it would always just be for a purely musical reason. It was something that looked like it could play against us (singing in English), but folk love records and concerts and want us to do such things from the heart and stomach.

Have you thought about going abroad?

Going to Europe, hanging around and seeing how the public reacts is one of the things that excites me the most. It shouldn’t be easy to arrange such a tour because they don’t know you. But we will at some point.

It turns out that people don’t have as much money as they used to for leisure or culture.

And the United States imposes more respect on you?

Ummmm… If the music we make has enough American roots, it’s a little respectable to go there to play our interpretation.

The expert Spanish press has you covered with compliments and good reviews.

Even if I don’t think so, I won’t be the one to say otherwise.

One day you will play on Winzik, maybe two days?

Ooo, I would. It turns out that people don’t have as much money as they used to for leisure or culture. Also, post-pandemic all the bands came out in a hurry and there are a lot of concerts but less money and fewer tickets are sold overall during these months. For us, living out of it is a luxury, and anything that can be expanded over time is welcome. If at some point we have to stop doing this, they can take it away from us, I’ll dance.

Did you release everything on vinyl?

Everything except the live album, which is currently only available on digital platforms, but will be released on vinyl. Those who come to see us are quite fond of the format.

With so many singles released, is this the best way to bring the disco concept to life?

Of course, the world has changed and it is consumed in a different way, but there are still people who have fun in this way and it gives us great pleasure to listen to an entire album.
