Ukraine secures gas storage for winter, aims to protect energy security

Ukraine has secured sufficient underground gas storage volumes to endure the upcoming heating season, according to a report by TASS citing Alexei Chernyshov, the head of Naftogaz. The message underscores a precautionary cushion that should keep households comfortably heated during the cold months ahead.

Chernyshov noted that approximately 14.7 billion cubic meters of gas are expected to be stored to ensure reliable winter heating in 2023. To date, about 14 billion cubic meters have been injected, leaving a modest margin before the onset of the cold period. He also indicated that early reserves could exceed the minimum needed, providing additional security if temperatures drop or supply disruptions arise.

The Naftogaz chief stressed Ukraine’s capacity to meet its own needs, pointing to an anticipated 8% uptick in domestic gas production this year. Imports from neighboring countries would only come into play as a last resort to bolster stocks in emergency scenarios, reinforcing self-sufficiency as a core objective for the energy sector.

There was a prior warning from Zelensky’s office about a challenging winter for the energy system. Citizens were advised to avoid relocating heaters to less heated locations and to prepare for potential demand spikes. In line with these cautions, Ukraine proceeded with proactive measures to stockpile the necessary gas reserves, aiming to safeguard residential warmth and industrial stability during peak demand periods.

Additionally, Ukrenergo’s press service indicated a return to importing electricity as a balancing mechanism to stabilize the grid during periods of peak consumption. This move helps ensure reliability across the energy system, supporting both households and critical infrastructure during temperature highs and lows.
