The company Limited Liability Company “Infrastructure Development” is poised to oversee a full-scale reconstruction of the Sukhum International Airport, an asset that has not operated since 1993. A deal between the Russian firm and Abkhazia’s Ministry of Economy was approved with participation by President Aslan Bzhania on October 27, and it gained official confirmation through the presidential press service.
Under a public-private partnership, the government of the Republic of Abkhazia and Infrastructure Development LLC agreed to restore the Sukhumi International Airport real estate complex. The press release highlighted a call to resume air traffic and emphasized the project as a step toward revitalizing regional connectivity.
Rashid Nurgaliev, identified as the owner of Infrastructure Development LLC, voiced gratitude to Abkhazian leaders for selecting the proposed modernization plan. In his remarks, he stressed that the airport’s reopening would enable visitors to reach Abkhazia’s resorts more rapidly and with greater comfort, reinforcing the area’s tourist appeal.
Nurgaliev noted that a modernized airport would unlock the republic’s substantial tourism potential and help expand the visitor economy. Kristina Özgan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Abkhazia, stated that the public-private partnership framework sets out the terms, financial parameters, and the subsequent operational procedures for redevelopment and long-term management of the complex.
According to Özgan, the airport, its associated infrastructure, the historic terminal building, and its status as a dual-use facility will remain under state ownership, as quoted by the press service.
Previously, President Aslan Bzhania announced plans for a new permanent Russian Navy base on the Black Sea coast of Abkhazia, with the signing of a related agreement. The base is to be located in the Ochamchira region, reflecting broader security and cooperation considerations in the region.
Russia recognized Abkhazia’s sovereignty on August 26, 2008. This milestone anniversary has been commemorated within the republic, underscoring the ongoing collaboration between Russian and Abkhazian security forces along with their coastal and border safeguarding efforts. Border oversight in the region involves the participation of Russian authorities in coordination with Abkhazian agencies.
Historically, the international status of Abkhazia and related geopolitical events have shaped regional alignments, with subsequent developments in governance and security continuing to influence ongoing cooperation and investments across the area.
