Russia’s Sugar Production Advances Through the 2024 Season
As of August 22, sugar production in Russia has surged since the start of the current agricultural season. Production levels reached 173 thousand tons, more than double the amount recorded on the same date in 2021. This growth reflects a robust push across the country’s sugar beet sector and industry reporting from Soyuzrossahar, the sugar beet association in Russia.
Throughout the season, the industry has produced 173 thousand tons of beet sugar, representing an increase of 100 thousand tons compared with the prior year at the same stage. On a weekly basis, average daily sugar production rose by 6 percent, reaching about 12.4 thousand tons per day. This uptick signals improved harvest yields, efficient processing, and favorable growing conditions across major beet-growing regions.
According to Soyuzrossahar, all 15 sugar factories in Russia’s Southern Federal District have been actively processing sugar beet and transforming it into sugar. The report also notes potential expansion, with 12 additional factories anticipated to begin production by the end of August. If these plants commence operation as planned, the total beet sugar output for August could reach around 370 thousand tons, underscoring a season of intense activity and capacity utilization in the region.
Industry leaders have repeatedly indicated that there is no shortage of sugar within Russia. Andrei Bodin, who chairs the board of the Russian Sugar Producers Association, stated that the market remains stable and supply to consumers is uninterrupted. The sentiment from Bodin aligns with ongoing production data showing healthy throughput and a generally steady domestic market, supported by a combination of favorable weather, strong beet yields, and coordinated factory operations. This stability provides a degree of assurance for food processors and retailers across the country, as well as for observers in North American markets monitoring export potential and price signals from Russian sugar production. Soyuzrossahar continues to monitor seasonal dynamics, factory throughput, and regional capacity to ensure reliable supply throughout the autumn harvest period and into the next marketing year.
