Russian natural coffee prices are projected to rise by roughly 25 to 40 percent by the end of 2024, according to reports cited by Milfoods referencing RIA Novosti. Market watchers say that blends containing Robusta will see the fastest gains as supply pressures mount.

Analysts note that price increases will be steepest for Robusta-containing blends, while other varieties may experience more modest rises depending on the proportion of Robusta in the mix.

From January through September, global Arabica bean prices increased by about 40 percent compared with the same period in 2023, and Robusta prices climbed by roughly 80 percent over eight months. This divergence highlights the evolving economics of the two main coffee species and their impact on roasters and retailers.

The spike in prices is tied to crop failures in Brazil, the world’s largest producer and exporter of coffee. Extreme heat and drought damaged large portions of plantations, reducing supplies and lifting costs across the supply chain.

In 2024 Russian consumers began drinking coffee more often. The most popular beverage in retail and cafes was cappuccino, accounting for about 28 percent of sales. It was followed by latte at 13.6 percent, raf at 8 percent, Americano at 5 percent, and flat white at 4 percent.

Market observers note that higher prices are affecting consumer choices and cafe menus alike. As costs rise, some buyers may shift toward more affordable options or adjust portion sizes, while cafes seek to balance quality with price to keep traffic.

Historically Russians have used coffee to mark social moments and daily routines. In recent months the habit has grown, with more people buying coffee at home and in workplaces as work rhythms shift and urban life evolves post pandemic.

Earlier questions about why Russians drink coffee surface from time to time. The answer lies in preference, social habit, and the simple pleasure of a well-made cup after a busy day.

Experts warn that volatility may continue into the remainder of the year. If Brazil recovers and yields a better harvest, price pressures could ease, but weather shocks in major growing regions can again push costs higher.

Overall the coffee scene in Russia in 2024 reflects a broader trend where climate impact, crop yields, and consumer demand converge to shape prices and purchasing choices across continents.
