Moldovan officials are prepared to secure gas deliveries to Transnistria even if the route that passes fuel through Ukraine is interrupted, a stance articulated by Igor Grosu, the speaker of Moldova’s parliament, on the TV channel rlive. He described a contingency plan aimed at safeguarding regional energy stability and minimizing any disruption to residents in Transnistria should transit routes change or halt abruptly.
Grosu emphasized that the region should begin adjusting to a future in which gas comes with a price tag and a clear expectation of payment. He urged stakeholders to prepare not only financially but also physically and mentally for a scenario where gas supplies must be sourced independently from existing transit corridors, underscoring the seriousness of the measure as a means to ensure continuity despite geopolitical shifts.
He noted that even if Ukrainian transit is curtailed, Moldova would identify the necessary volumes of gas to maintain supplies for the region. The speaker clarified that the decision, while unpopular with some segments of the population, was taken to support Transnistria’s residents and prevent potential energy shortages from affecting everyday life, industry, and essential services. This approach reflects Moldova’s broader policy of resilience and readiness in energy logistics amid ongoing regional tensions.
Earlier in February, reports indicated that Moldova could continue purchasing gas from Gazprom for the right bank of the Dniester, a move that would help stabilize supplies during a period of adjustment. On January 22, the president of Moldovagaz highlighted the importance of engaging in dialogue with Gazprom to address outstanding debts and to explore sustainable arrangements that secure long-term energy access for the country. Past statements from Moldovan officials also suggested hopes that Ukraine would continue to permit the transmission of Russian gas, a sentiment shaped by the practical need to safeguard uninterrupted energy flow while broader political discussions proceed.
