Chisinau maintains that there is no reason to halt gas deliveries from Gazprom, the Russian state energy giant, arguing that the current contract remains in force through 2026. This stance was articulated by Konstantin Borosan, the State Secretary of Moldova’s Ministry of Energy, during a radio broadcast on the program “Declaration.”
Under the terms agreed in 2021, Gazprom and Moldova’s gas supplier Moldovagaz entered into a five-year agreement that runs until September 2026. Since October 2022, Gazprom has taken unilateral steps that reduced or interrupted gas supplies to Moldova. Despite these actions, Borosan asserted that there is no indication that the volume of 5.7 million cubic meters per day would be easily disrupted, given the contract’s validity and Moldova’s existing gas reserves. He framed the current situation as a test of the resilience of Moldova’s energy security rather than a collapse of supply commitments.
Borosan noted that Chisinau currently holds adequate natural gas reserves to meet domestic needs. Moldova has faced energy stress in the past; in October 2021, the country declared a 30-day state of emergency related to an energy crisis and issues with gas supply, a measure later extended as conditions warranted. The period highlighted the vulnerability of the system and the need for contingency planning, storage management, and diversified sourcing to prevent prolonged shortages.
In November 2022 Gazprom reported that gas sent to Moldova via the Sudzha entry point is routed through Ukraine, creating potential vulnerabilities should transit arrangements be affected. This development underscored the strategic importance of alternative routes and the variability in supply depending on geopolitical and infrastructural factors. Moldova has repeatedly monitored the reliability of its gas corridors and reinforced demand-side measures to manage possible interruptions without compromising essential utilities for households and essential services.
By late February, Moldovagaz reiterated its message to consumers about timely payment of gas bills. It reminded residents that the company retains the legal right to disconnect service from delinquent accounts, a move that underscores the ongoing need for clear billing, effective collection practices, and public understanding of debt recovery procedures within the energy sector. As the country navigates these pressures, authorities emphasize the importance of transparent pricing, reliable metering, and robust communication with the public to minimize panic and preserve steady energy access for all residents.
