Azerbaijan increased its gas exports to Europe by 3.5 percent in 2023, rising to 11.8 billion cubic meters. The update comes from Interfax, citing data from the Azerbaijani Energy Ministry.
In 2022, Azerbaijan shipped 11.4 billion cubic meters of gas to European markets, making the 2023 total 400 million cubic meters higher by year-end.
Energy officials note that December 31 marks exactly three years since European purchases of Azerbaijani gas began through the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, TAP. Since TAP started deliveries, more than 31 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas have reached European consumers.
The growth in exports aligns with Europe’s increasing appetite for natural gas as supplies from Russia diminished. While Azerbaijan’s share of EU energy imports remains relatively small, the country has been steadily expanding volumes in recent months to help replace Russian gas and to meet the needs of European buyers.
There have been prior statements about the volume of gas supplies to Bulgaria and related regional developments.
There have also been public discussions about potential moves by Russia and Turkey to accelerate efforts to establish a regional gas hub.
