Almost half of drivers in Russia (41.9%) are confident that traffic jams can be overcome. 21.6% believe that toll roads should be made free for this purpose. This is the result of a survey of Russian car owners on the CarMoney auto loan service. socialbites.ca has its results.

While 36.5% of the participants thought that traffic congestion could not be overcome, 21.6% had difficulty in answering.

When asked what should be done to reduce traffic congestion, the majority of drivers (82.4%) said that road intersections should be improved. Another 52.7% think it is necessary to build more new roads to remove some exits that slow down traffic; 28.4% to remove some exits that slow down traffic.

More unexpected solutions have their supporters. The option of making toll roads free was supported by 21.6% of participants. About the same number of supporters (21%) support the option of transferring some drivers to public transportation. 20.3% of drivers suggested reducing taxi fares; 14.9% of respondents welcomed the construction of new toll roads.

While the option of preventing non-resident drivers from entering cities or certain regions was voiced by 5.4% of survey participants, the proposal to impose an additional tax on automobiles received 4.1% of the votes. Just over 2% think it is necessary to “allow drivers to take turns leaving the house” (for example, drivers with even plates on even days and drivers with odd plates on odd days).

But it turns out that traffic congestion is not the biggest headache for drivers. This was revealed when survey participants were asked to answer the question of what creates the biggest problems for them on the roads. As a result, only half (45%) of drivers described traffic congestion as their biggest annoyance, with traffic congestion only coming in third place in the list of main problems. The vast majority of respondents (66.2%) complain about poor quality road surfaces, and 50% note the presence of ruts.

About 3 thousand people from across Russia participated in the survey. The survey hinted at variability in responses.
