The European Union is filling gas tanks ahead of time to get the region ready for next winter. About it in an interview for the American edition Policy Kadri Simson, Commissioner for Energy of the European Commission, said.
The volume of fuel stocks in EU countries reached a “historic maximum” on 17 August, according to the agency. As the European Gas Infrastructure Operators Association (European Gas Infrastructure Europe) previously reported, the storage facilities are currently 90.12% full. At the same time, it has been legally established that Brussels only has to reach its 90% target by November.
“The confirmation that we have met our requirement to fill the gas storage facilities ahead of schedule underlines that the EU is well prepared for winter and will help further stabilize markets in the months ahead,” Simson said.
However, the publication pointed out that the success in the energy sector did not lead to a decrease in gas prices in Europe. Fuel costs are still higher than before the escalation of the Ukrainian conflict. As a result, households continue to receive higher bills, and the local industry is showing considerably lower productivity, the agency said.
