The tragedy took place in the city of Chaozhou, located in Guangdong Province in southern China.
Tesla’s electric car lost control of the steering wheel and spontaneously accelerated to high speed.
From the images of the video that appeared on social networks, it seems that Tesla is racing at a speed close to its maximum.
There were reports in a number of Chinese media that the driver tried to press the brake pedal, but it is quite difficult to determine for sure whether the brake lights are on from the video.
Reuters writes that the driver’s family stated that the car’s brakes failed, but Tesla has already denied this statement.
In uncontrolled mode, the car drove for approximately two kilometers, hitting two motorcyclists and two cyclists, eventually killing two people and injuring three others.
The causes of the malfunction are still unknown. Tesla is conducting a joint investigation with the local police.
- Another similar case, also in China, happened to Tesla in 2020, but then, after a sudden activation of the autopilot, the driver managed to jump out of the car.
- “Behind the wheel” can be read in Odnoklassniki.
