Winter Vehicle Starters: Common Causes and Practical Fixes

Several reasons for possible malfunctions were noted by the expert behind the wheel, Mikhail Kolodochkin.

Fuel acts up in chilly weather

Liquid fuel can seize up when the temperature drops. This can manifest as water droplets forming in the gas line, or as winter fuel that arrives deceptively under the label of summer diesel in the tank or the fuel filter. The practical fix in such cases is to move the vehicle to a warm space. Anti-gels and other automotive additives help only as preventive measures, not as a cure for a current problem.

Engine oil thickens when it’s cold

So viscous that the starter struggles to turn the crankshaft. The remedy mirrors the previous point: seek warmth and give the engine a chance to recover. If possible, drain the old oil and replace it with a winter-grade specification such as 0W or 5W before attempting a restart. If time allows, wait for a thaw rather than forcing a crank in severe cold.

Glow plugs fail in cold starts

This issue is particularly common in diesel engines. Many drivers preheat the glow plugs in several steps before engaging the starter. The straightforward solution is to replace faulty glow plugs promptly and without hesitation, which tends to prevent repeated cold-start struggles.

Battery runs low or dies

Possible actions include a full charge, jump-start from another vehicle, or using a booster. The choice depends on the battery’s condition and the surrounding circumstances. In some cases, a battery replacement is the sensible next step.

Blocked exhaust or restricted flow

Winter conditions can create situations where the exhaust path is obstructed, such as backing into a snowbank. In such cases the exhaust must be allowed to vent freely to prevent buildup of dangerous gases and to restore proper engine performance.

There are additional seasonal factors that deserve attention, described in detail here.

By considering these common winter-related causes, drivers can better prepare their vehicles for freezing conditions. Routine pre-trip checks, appropriate maintenance, and timely component replacements reduce the likelihood of roadside trouble. It is advisable to store emergency supplies and to plan ahead for sudden temperature drops, which can amplify these issues. This perspective aligns with practical guidance offered by experts in automotive care, who emphasize proactive maintenance and safe practices for cold-weather starts. (Source: Behind the wheel, M.
