Viktor Martynenko, head of the emergency training program, shared winter driving guidelines on Radio 1 to help motorists minimize accidents during icy conditions. He emphasizes keeping windshields, wipers, and mirrors spotless so ice cannot obscure visibility. He also warns against abrupt maneuvers on slick roads and urges drivers to maintain steady, deliberate handling.
Martynenko advises drivers to continually scan the road using rearview mirrors. When weather is unfavorable, lane changes should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Planning the route in advance can prevent surprises that put drivers at risk, he notes.
Practical preparations are also key. The expert recommends equipping vehicles for emergencies, including winter tires and a spare bottle of antifreeze. A brush and ice scraper should be in the trunk, and the vehicle should be inspected before the cold season begins to ensure all systems are functioning properly.
Sergei Ponomarev, a technical instructor with the Fit Service car service network, previously highlighted the importance of a comprehensive pre-winter diagnostic. He said attention should be given to door seals to prevent leaks, checking fluid levels, and selecting oil with the proper viscosity for colder temperatures.
Experts agree that neglecting winter readiness can lead to breakdowns after the season ends, underscoring the value of proactive maintenance and careful driving in cold weather.
