At the outset of 2023, the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg will close for a period from January 9 through January 27. The shutdown will impact the body shop, paint shop, and nearby facilities, while the waiting areas and maintenance operations will continue to function. A company spokesman confirmed these details.
The interruptions are attributed to disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Volkswagen Group Brand Director Thomas Schaefer described the logistics situation as a scene of “complete chaos,” noting that the production pace has tumbled to fewer than 400,000 vehicles annually, well below the plant’s full capacity that typically turns out models such as the Golf, Tiguan, and Touran.
Looking ahead, the assembly line is expected to accommodate the ID.3 electric vehicle and the Tiguan’s upcoming sibling, whose exact name has not yet been announced. This shift highlights a broader push toward electrification and the rebalancing of manufacturing priorities in response to market dynamics and supply chain pressures.
