The SsangYong brand faced a dramatic sales collapse in Russia during the period from 2015 to 2019, and in the past two to three years it has hovered near bankruptcy, struggling to attract a new investor in any way.
Nevertheless, the company remains active and has introduced a new product to its home market — the Torres crossover.
The name Torres honors one of Chile’s national parks, signaling an adventurous and outdoor-oriented spirit. Combined with its rugged design, this seems a fitting choice. Yet Torres is, in reality, a conventional crossover: a load-bearing body with a front-wheel drive platform, available with optional all-wheel drive in higher trims.
Torres slots into SsangYong’s lineup between the Korando and Rexton, indicating a vehicle length around 4.6 to 4.7 meters. The trunk region offers a substantial 703 liters with five seats in use. If extra space is needed, valuables can be stowed in a lockable exterior box mounted on the starboard side. The exterior styling hints at influence from the Defender, with a front grille pattern that has drawn attention from onlookers, including observers of Jeep designs.
Inside, the instrument panel features a 12.3-inch multimedia display, while climate control is managed by an 8-inch touchscreen. The climate system supports dual-zone operation and includes ventilation for the front seats, providing comfort across varying weather conditions.
Under the hood, the Torres employs a modern but straightforward powertrain by current standards: a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine delivering around 170 horsepower, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The drive layout is front-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive available as an optional upgrade for those seeking enhanced traction in rougher conditions or harsher climates.
Initial pricing in Korea is positioned around 21,000 dollars. Looking ahead, the lineup is expected to expand with an electric variant in the following year, broadening the brand’s electrified offering.
