In September, Russia saw 110.4 thousand newly sold passenger cars. This figure marks a 2.5-fold increase over the same month last year, according to data from the analytical agency Avtostat in partnership with JSC PPK. The market’s momentum reflects a sustained rebound in demand and a shift in consumer confidence as the year progresses.

The market remains led by Lada, capturing nearly one third of September sales with a market share close to 32 percent and total sales around 35 thousand units. Following Lada are Chery with about 12.1 thousand units, Haval at 11.1 thousand, Geely at 9.2 thousand, Changan with 6.1 thousand, Omoda at 5.2 thousand, and Exeed near 4 thousand units. Rounding out the top ten are Kia with 2.4 thousand, Toyota with 2.3 thousand, and Jetour with 1.6 thousand units. The distribution shows a diverse mix of brands and segments dominating the Russian market in the period.

Among these brands, Kia was the only one to report a decline, posting a drop of 27.7 percent from the previous period. The most dramatic growth was observed for Changan, which surged by 25.6 times versus the seasonal low base three months earlier, underscoring a rapid shift in buyer interest and model portfolio mix.

In the model rankings, the two strongest performers were Lada Granta, with approximately 19.4 thousand units, and Lada Vesta at about 6.4 thousand units. The Haval Jolion crossover reached 5.7 thousand units, while the Lada Niva Travel SUV exceeded the five thousand unit mark with around 5 thousand units. Other popular models in September included the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max, Lada Niva Legend, Omoda C5, Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, Geely Coolray, and Geely Monjaro, reflecting a broad demand across compact, crossover, and SUV segments.

Over the first nine months of the year, Russia reported total passenger car sales of 717.3 thousand units, illustrating a year-over-year increase of about 51.1 percent. This sustained growth points to a recovering market environment following the prior year’s challenges and highlights the resilience of the Russian automotive sector as consumer demand gradually normalizes across different price bands and model lines.

A side note touches the MTPL price landscape in 2023, with ongoing discussions about insurance costs and their impact on total vehicle ownership expenses. These conversations accompany the broader market trends and influence considerations for buyers weighing new-car purchases against total ownership costs.
