The Renault dealer network in Russia may transition to the Lada dealer network
A strategic shift is being considered by Russia’s automotive retail sector. Aleksey Tikhomirov, the general manager of Lada Image JSC, a subdivision of AVTOVAZ responsible for parts distribution, described a plan to convert Renault dealerships into Lada outlets while retaining the capability to sell the French brand’s vehicles. The goal is to operate full-service dealerships that can manage both the existing inventory and new vehicle sales, ensuring continuous customer support and showroom activity.
The practical effect of this proposal would be that Renault dealers could offer Lada cars alongside Renault models. In Russia, 155 dealerships represented French brands; of these, 90 continue with the same brand focus, 42 engage in used-vehicle sales in addition to new car sales from other brands, and 16 deal in additional branded vehicles. Only seven enterprises reportedly faced bankruptcy. Autostat data indicates Renault had roughly 7,000 unsold vehicles in the Russian Federation at that time.
Regarding warranty coverage and post-warranty service for Renault vehicles, AVTOVAZ has taken on responsibility for these obligations. Lada Image currently holds ownership of Renault’s spare-parts warehouse in the country, facilitating the distribution of required components to the majority of Renault dealerships that still operate. This arrangement aims to stabilize aftersales support during the transition period.
- AVTOVAZ temporarily permitted its own Lada dealers to retail models from other brands.
