New Traffic Monitoring: How Moscow Region Cameras Are Expanding Their Reach
Modern traffic cameras now monitor up to 20 distinct violations. Last year, authorities expanded the system to record six additional offenses: driving into safety islands, crossing railway lines at a prohibition signal (note – the sign remains active until the barrier fully opens), an unfastened seat belt, running a red light, and a right turn from a lane where right turns are not permitted. These updates reflect a shift toward more comprehensive enforcement on major roadways.
Representatives of the operator of the regional traffic control network, MVS Group, announced that cameras in the Moscow region can now detect vehicles without dipped headlights or daytime running lights. They also began identifying drivers who hold a mobile phone while driving. This marks a broader set of criteria for identifying noncompliance and enhancing road safety across the area.
Cameras determine violations related to vehicle weight and axle limits based on the vehicle’s make and model. In addition, they monitor visible infractions such as following distances and other safe-driving practices. The new capabilities are designed to improve overall traffic discipline and reduce risky behaviors on busy corridors.
According to RG, these camera functions have passed testing and are prepared for deployment. The rollout aims to provide clearer enforcement signals for motorists while supporting safer driving patterns across the region.
