The New Year period in Moscow brings a rare convenience for travelers: the metro, the Moscow Central Circle and ground transport are free from 8 PM on December 31 to 6 AM on January 1. According to the press service of the capital’s mayor, public transport will operate through the night, ensuring that residents and visitors can move about the city without worrying about fare costs during these hours. In addition to free rides, the metro will broadcast the New Year’s address of the Russian president, with celebratory messages voiced by well-known performers echoing through escalators and on the surface transit routes as people travel between venues, parties, and gatherings. This combination of free service and festive programming is designed to accommodate late-night celebrations and help manage crowds in the busiest periods of the holiday season.
There are no plans to close road sections on New Year’s Eve. This means car traffic is expected to continue through the night, making it possible to drive, park, or be picked up near key nightlife areas. The city’s approach emphasizes maintaining mobility while offering safe public transport options for those who prefer not to drive. The balance between open roadways and continuous transit service is intended to reduce congestion and provide flexible options for residents and visitors alike during the holiday window.
From January 1 to January 8, 2023, parking in the paid parking zone is free on public holidays, with the exception of closed parking spaces that have a barrier. This policy supports regional visitors who rely on on-street and garage parking during the New Year period, though drivers should still observe posted restrictions and any temporary signage. The city’s parking guidance is part of a broader strategy to ease movement during a time of heightened activity while preserving access to central districts for commerce, tourism, and special events.
