The Russian authorities are planning a substantial expansion of electric vehicle production, aiming for a ninefold increase. Projections indicate that in 2023 the country will manufacture about 18 thousand electric cars, rising to 36 thousand in 2024. This outlook was shared during a strategic session on electric transport led by First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov.
Last year the domestic output of electric vehicles stood at roughly 2,000 units, signaling a rapid acceleration in manufacturing capacity and market penetration.
To date, the registration of electric vehicles in Russia has reached around 24.5 thousand vehicles. In terms of charging infrastructure, more than 7.5 thousand charging stations are currently in operation, with 35 EZS operators actively supporting the network, according to Maxim Kolesnikov, Deputy Minister of Economic Development.
The surge in government purchases of electric vehicles is driven largely by fiscal support measures. These include a mix of preferential car loans for individuals and favorable leasing terms for legal entities. In addition, several regions are piloting benefits such as free parking and exemptions from motor vehicle tax, which collectively help stimulate demand and expand adoption.
