In the coming decade, electric vehicles are unlikely to achieve broad adoption across the country when considering the vast geography and regional differences. This assessment was echoed by the president of AvtoVAZ, who points to the unique challenges posed by Russia’s expansive spaces and long distances between cities. He indicated that, with current infrastructure and logistical realities, electric cars may not become widespread nationwide in the near term, at least through 2030.

The outlook shifts somewhat for major urban centers. According to the AvtoVAZ leadership, large cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg could see earlier uptake, driven by denser populations, more robust charging networks, and intensified municipal support. AvtoVAZ remains committed to advancing electric mobility and plans to unveil its own electric model within the year, signaling a strategic focus on urban and regional pilots alongside broader rural considerations.
