Compared with the same period last year, diesel at gas stations has risen by 4 rubles per liter. In many regions, the price for diesel has even surpassed the cost of premium gasoline, such as AI-98 and higher grades, for the first time in several markets.
According to the Department of Energy press office, the price adjustment for diesel is largely driven by seasonal factors tied to the switch from summer to winter fuel formulations, which are generally more expensive.
On the wholesale side, winter diesel prices have shown little change since the end of last year, while retail sales prices have climbed by about 8 percent. This divergence highlights the typical lag between wholesale pricing and consumer-facing retail rates during seasonal transitions.
Industry analysts link the uptick in domestic diesel prices to a broader shift in trade flows, notably increased exports of diesel fuel to Europe. The European market has faced a pronounced shortage, making diesel shipments there financially attractive for suppliers. Such external demand can exert upwards pressure on prices in home markets as supply adjusts to international opportunities.
Looking ahead, experts anticipate a modest rise in diesel prices over the next couple of months. They expect that the trend could stabilize once any European embargo measures take full effect, potentially curbing the price surge from the export drive.
