China readies new car models for the Russian market, signaling ongoing collaboration

China is prepared to develop and introduce vehicle models tailored to the needs of buyers in Russia, according to reports from TASS and II. The statement was made by Zhang Hanhui, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Russian Federation, during remarks at the Russia-China Automotive Forum.

The ambassador emphasized that China plans to continue refining its model lineup to suit Russian preferences. He highlighted commitments to top-tier quality, reliable service, and the ongoing integration of the two nations’ automotive production and supply chains, underscoring a strategic partnership in the automotive sector that spans manufacturing, distribution, and after-sales support.

Russia is described as a major destination for Chinese vehicles. Data indicate that Chinese automakers exported $9.4 billion worth of cars to Russia in the first ten months of 2023, reflecting a strong bilateral exchange in this industry.

Market research within Russia showed a clear preference pattern among Chinese brands. Haval emerged as the most favored model line, capturing 47.5 percent of respondents’ votes. Chery followed with 24.9 percent, and Geely held 20.3 percent in third place. Exeed and Great Wall also ranked within the top tier of choices, at 14.3 percent and 8 percent respectively. More than 6 percent of participants selected Omoda, while JAC and Changan attracted around 4 percent each. Completing the top ten were FAW at 1.7 percent, with Voyah and Dongfeng each drawing around 0.7 percent of responses.

Earlier reports noted favorable durability claims for Chery, Haval, and Geely vehicles, including a tendency to resist rust comparatively well, which may influence consumer perceptions in the Russian market.

These developments illustrate a broader focus on cross-border automotive cooperation between China and Russia, aiming to meet evolving consumer demands while strengthening the resilience and reach of manufacturing and distribution networks across both countries. The trend aligns with ongoing efforts to diversify supply chains and expand the availability of Chinese-brand vehicles in Russia and related markets, supported by ongoing dialogue among policymakers, manufacturers, and industry analysts.
