For eight months of the current year, banks issued 298.63 thousand car loans totaling 374.48 billion rubles. The overall number of new car loans fell by 88% versus the same period last year, while the total loan volume declined by 60%. In eight months of 2021, Russians obtained 562.62 thousand bank car loans worth 597.76 billion rubles, according to the United Credit Bureau.
Yet, August results show renewed appetite for borrowed funds: in August 2022 the number of new car loans rose by 18% from the previous month and the loan volume grew by 16%. In August this year, 48.21 thousand car loans were issued for 56.82 billion rubles, while in July the figures were 40.93 thousand loans for 49.15 billion rubles.
Moscow residents accounted for the largest share of lending — 3.58 thousand loans totaling 6.35 billion rubles, the Moscow region recorded 3.67 thousand loans for 5.75 billion rubles, St. Petersburg 3.04 thousand loans for 4.65 billion rubles, the Krasnodar Territory 2.30 thousand loans for 2.99 billion rubles, and Tatarstan 2.42 thousand loans for 2.46 billion rubles.
The average loan amount for a car loan in July and August stood at 1.2 million rubles. The biggest average loan sizes were in August among Moscow residents — about 1.77 million rubles; the Moscow region followed with 1.57 million rubles; St. Petersburg 1.53 million rubles; the Leningrad region 1.37 million rubles; and the Krasnodar Territory 1.28 million rubles.
The smallest average ticket was observed among residents of Udmurtia at 842 thousand rubles. The changes in loan volumes show growth in Chuvashia with a 32% rise in July 2022, while in Irkutsk region the number of car loans fell by 2% year over year from July. The largest month-to-month increase in the average check appeared in Chuvashia at 9%. In 18 regions, the average check declined, most notably in the Orenburg region by 15%, amounting to 860 thousand rubles.
