This article reviews the major changes motorists should expect this year. It provides a clear overview of policy updates and practical implications for drivers across the region.

Important adjustments to the SDA were enacted by government decree and are slated to take effect on March 1, 2023. These changes will shape daily driving routines, enforcement practices, and how vehicles are parked in crowded urban areas.

Ban on parking on safety islands

Safety islands—those painted with white stripes—will no longer be eligible for stopping or parking. Violations will carry a fine of 500 rubles; in federal cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg, fines climb to 2,500 rubles. Additionally, vehicles parked on safety islands may be towed and placed in an impound lot under the new rules. The aim is to keep intersections clear and improve pedestrian safety at crosswalks and junctions.

New formatting colors

Paid parking spaces are now marked with blue lines, while free spots remain white. Parking signs for paid areas will include a coin symbol paired with the familiar P and will be displayed on a single blue sign rather than on a separate white sign as before. This consolidation makes parking information quicker to recognize for drivers in urban centers.

New traffic light section

A new section beneath traffic signals introduces a silhouette showing a pedestrian or cyclist and an arrow with a flashing moon-white signal. This addition informs drivers that pedestrians and cyclists may detour from the exit at the crossing, prompting advance caution at busy intersections. The update helps smooth interactions between vehicles and vulnerable road users, especially during peak travel times.

For more details, the Government of the Russian Federation provides official guidance and context for these changes.

Vote – win Lada!

Readers are invited to participate in the Behind the Wheel Grand Prix vote to help identify the standout car novelties of the year. Participation rewards are part of the experience, with a drawing that awards three prizes among all survey respondents. The drawing closes as scheduled, and all eligible entries submitted before the deadline will be considered.
