According to the source, the Rich Ongoing Notifications API feature was discovered in Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3, which allows apps to display not just an app icon in the status bar, but also an island with text and background color.
The API is not currently available for Android apps, so there is no detailed information about how Rich Ongoing Notifications work. However, Android Authority showed off a prototype interface for such notifications that shows notifications for various apps, including Uber and Alarm Clock.
Although Google took inspiration from Apple’s Dynamic Island feature, it is assumed that similar notifications were used before they appeared on the iPhone. For example, something similar was found in the “Phone” app in Android 12.
The release of Android 16 is expected to occur earlier than usual in 2025, namely in the first half of summer. The version’s codename is Baklava (baklava).
