Employees of the information security department of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) have developed a new generation flash card equipped with an authentication unit and an automatic data masking system. This device provides a high level of security for the information stored on it and prevents unauthorized access. Post about it appeared on the official website of the university.
The flash drive recognizes not only legitimate users but also computers on which it can be used. The user has the opportunity to set and edit the list of “allowed” computers, as well as perform other actions related to granting access. The administrator only has access to read and write data.
The initial setup of the “user” and “administrator” states is carried out using special software that is stored in the device’s memory and cannot be deleted or overwritten. Developers emphasize that a flash drive can have only one administrator and one user, but for personal use one person can combine these two roles.
These flash drives can be used in a secure computer system where it is not possible to enter or remove extraneous data, for example within a local corporate network. Integrating flash cards into an information system with an authentication unit does not reduce its security, since external media cannot be used outside of it.
If an attacker tries to bypass the set restrictions and read data directly from the memory chip, he will only see encrypted data. At the same time, the legal user who opens the flash drive on an authorized computer will see a normal file.
The immediate plans of the developers include starting small-scale production of secure flash drives using only domestic components. This will make the product import independent.
