Analytical center StormWall identified three sectors most likely to be subjected to massive DDoS attacks in the first half of 2024. The results of the research are available on socialbites.ca.
The largest number of attacks were in telecommunications (34% of all attacks), public sector (16%) and energy (14%). According to experts, most of the DDoS attacks were carried out by politically motivated hackers who wanted to damage the Russian economy, create problems for business and harm the population.
Other industries also saw significant attacks, particularly retail (12%), finance (10%), IT (9%) and education (3%). Attacks on other sectors only accounted for 2% of the total.
StormWall analysis showed that the total number of attacks in Russia in the second quarter of 2024 increased by 74% compared to the same period last year. The largest increase in attacks was recorded in the telecommunications sector, where the number of attacks increased by 153%, reaching a record figure among all sectors. Attacks on the public sector increased by 64%, and attacks on the IT sector increased by 42%.
While attacks on some sectors remain high, overall attacks on the financial sector (68%), entertainment (35%) and retail (26%) have decreased in the first half of 2024. This is because these sectors are the most protected and hackers are gradually losing interest in them. The telecommunications sector remains the most attractive sector for attacks due to its high efficiency.
StormWall recorded a 102% increase in attacks globally in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year. This is due to elections in various countries and complex geopolitics. Globally, the most attacked sectors were the public sector (29%), entertainment (16%), and finance (14%). Telecommunications came in fourth (11%), and transportation (8%). The high level of attacks on the public sector was explained by hackers’ attempts to disrupt elections through DDoS attacks on government websites.
StormWall also identified the sectors with the highest growth in attacks worldwide. Compared to the same period last year, attacks on the public sector increased by 116 percent, attacks on the entertainment sector by 81 percent, and attacks on the financial sector by 74 percent. Attacks on telecommunications increased by 36 percent, attacks on transportation by 32 percent, and attacks on retail by 27 percent.
The situation in the world is significantly different from that in Russia. In the first half of 2024, the growth of attacks in the world is higher than in Russia and is observed in all sectors, while in Russia, both growth and decline in attacks are recorded in various areas.
