Five Chinese citizens were arrested in the US for returning fake iPhones to stores after purchasing genuine smartphones. Scammers managed to defraud Apple of $12 million. says On the US Department of Justice website.
The fraud involved the defendants delivering counterfeit iPhones that were indistinguishable from the real thing to Apple stores under warranty and requesting replacements. Apple gave new devices to scammers and they sold them.
It is claimed that such an operation was carried out 16 thousand times and Apple suffered losses of at least 12.3 million dollars (about 1.1 billion rubles). Over the years, scammers have managed to replace thousands of iPhones, iPads and other Apple devices.
According to investigators, criminals used this scheme from December 2014 to March 2024, and all their actions were coordinated from China, where they received the fake devices.
The fake devices were given ID numbers stolen from real people with an active AppleCare warranty. It is believed that genuine users may have lost their warranty due to the actions of fraudsters. To cover their tracks, the defendants visited various Apple stores in California, visiting as many as ten stores in one day.
The case is currently being sent to court.
