Kaspersky Lab experts have discovered ShrinkLocker, a new ransomware virus that blocks Windows computers. For this, the encryptor uses BitLocker technology, which is designed to protect users, the portal reports Safe List.
Experts determined that ShrinkLocker runs BitLocker on computers running Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, as well as later versions of the operating system. The script will not work on devices with older OS versions. After the data is encrypted using BitLocker and a new encryption key is generated, information about the infected computer is sent to the attackers.
After infection and encryption, the computer reboots to a new partition and the user loses access to all his data. The new boot partition is named after the hacker’s email so the victim can contact him for the ransom.
Kaspersky Lab has not yet been able to identify the source of the attacks. It is noted that the attackers’ goal is not to obtain ransom, but to corrupt and destroy data. Attackers have already used this virus to attack the IT infrastructure of companies and government agencies in Mexico, Indonesia and Jordan.
Previously reportedIt was revealed that hackers around the world were attacking important software for computer forensics.
