The European Commission has appointed Booking.com as a watchdog under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and launched an investigation into social network X (Twitter). In this respect reports Reuters agency.
While Booking will soon need to start complying with DMA requirements, the Commission will only need to determine the status of X and TikTok. At the same time, the EU has already issued a decision on advertising services X Ads and TikTok Ads; these do not meet the “gatekeeper” criteria.
It is noteworthy that TikTok was already recognized as a “gatekeeper” in July 2023, but Byte Dance, the owner of the video service, challenged this status in Europe’s second largest court. Now the EU will have to prove TikTok’s relationship with this category of services again.
The Digital Markets Act (DMA) is one of the toughest pieces of legislation aimed at breaking the market dominance of big tech companies, imposing tougher obligations on them to moderate content, ensure fair competition and make it easier for consumers to switch between services. . Services that fall within the definition of a door controller must comply with DMA requirements.
In order to become a Gatekeeper, the platform must have a certain number of users and play an important role in the processes of companies doing business in these services. For example, at the beginning of 2024, the EU recognized Apple’s App Store as a “gatekeeper”.
