The US Department of Commerce has decided to revoke licenses that allow Intel and Qualcomm to export semiconductors to Huawei. The move is part of the US’s ongoing policy towards the Chinese tech giant. In this respect reports Publication of the Financial Times (FT).
According to the Financial Times, the withdrawal of licenses will affect the supply of chips that Huawei uses in the production of laptops, smartphones and other electronic products. This could seriously harm Huawei’s business by denying the company access to advanced US semiconductor technologies.
Previously, Huawei managed to impress the world by launching the Mate 60 Pro smartphone with its own flagship chip, despite the current restrictions. This has led American lawmakers to question the effectiveness of existing sanctions measures and call for their tightening.
For example, Republicans in the US Congress such as Senator Marco Rubio and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik pressured the Biden administration to revoke the export licenses of Intel and Qualcomm following reports that Huawei was using Intel’s most advanced chips in its laptops.
Experts believe this decision shows Washington’s determination to confront Chinese technology companies seen as a threat to US national security. At the same time, the decision also caused alarm among US allies who fear tightening restrictions on exports of semiconductor technologies.
It is stated that stopping supplies to Huawei is unlikely to have a significant impact on the businesses of Qualcomm and Intel. Qualcomm recently told Huawei that its supply is limited and will soon run out because it has long been banned from selling 5G-enabled chips to the Chinese company. As for Intel, Huawei is also not on the list of its biggest customers.
