Apple’s Safari browser may soon become smarter. With data According to AppleInsider, the IT giant from Cupertino is actively testing the artificial intelligence in the program, so it may at least have a Smart Search function.
Apple engineers are currently testing this tool. It is built on the proprietary Ajax big language model. With its help, Smart Search will be able to analyze articles on the Internet and provide users with a summary of them.
Most likely the new feature will be similar to some neural network extensions already on the market. For example, services such as Chat-GPT and OpenAI’s Perplexity create summaries by synthesizing information collected online.
“Since this tool is developed by Apple, it will likely have additional privacy features, including processing information on the user’s device rather than on the company’s servers,” AppleInsider said.
Safari is the default web browser on iPhones and Apple computers, according to Statista. It accounts for approximately 18% of global search traffic. In terms of share of search traffic, Apple’s browser ranks second after Google Chrome.
In addition to Smart Search, Apple also appears to be testing a feature called Web Eraser, which will allow users to remove unwanted content like ads, images, and text from web pages. These settings will be remembered even after the user closes the tab or closes the browser.
It’s highly likely that Apple will talk publicly about Safari’s AI features at the WWDC developer conference, which is scheduled to begin on June 10, 2024.
Previously Apple accepted $20 billion from Google in exchange for a small concession.
