It will take 10 years to develop a Russian game console that can compete with PlayStation and Xbox devices. With reference to experts on this subject reports publication “Kommersant” (“Kommersant”).
The Russian government must submit a report on behalf of President Vladimir Putin on “considering the issue of organizing the production” of domestic game consoles by June 15. This is not the first time that the issue of the release of domestic gaming devices is being discussed in Russia – in 2022, the government started talking about this issue and developed measures to support the gaming industry until 2030.
One of Kommersant’s interlocutors noted that at least two companies in Russia have the necessary competence: Fplus and GS Group. They may be involved in equipment development and production, and the creation of software and service parts may be left to VK.
According to Fplus, Russia does not have sufficient expertise in console production and support at the level of PlayStation and Xbox. The main problem is that these devices are equipped with the latest components, but are sold at cost or even cheaper, since platform owners receive income from the sale of games. At the same time, the representative of Fplus believes that it is possible to create an analogue of Steam Deck in the Russian Federation relatively quickly, because in essence this device is a minicomputer with a modified version of the desktop operating system and convenient controllers.
Another interlocutor of the publication noted that it would take up to 10 years to create a gaming system from scratch in the Russian Federation. Additionally, cash investments of 5-10 billion rubles will be needed. But even with this the finished device will lag behind existing foreign analogues by 10-15 years.
