In 2023, the Russian telecom sector faced an increase in DDoS attacks. Their numbers quadrupled from October 1 to November 30, cybersecurity company StormWall told socialbites.ca.
DDoS attack (Distributed Denial of Service) is a type of hacker attack in which an information system is overloaded with a large number of incoming requests from many computers combined in a structure called a botnet. This may cause the site or service to perform poorly or be unavailable to users until the attack is completed.
Experts found that attackers launched multi-vector attacks against the telecom industry, targeting different elements of the organization’s infrastructure, from web pages to provider networks.
Most often, DDoS attacks in 2023 were detected in the south of Russia – Krasnodar, Stavropol, Rostov-on-Don and other regions. The shortest DDoS lasted only 20 minutes and the longest telecommunications attack lasted three days.
As a result, customers of Internet providers suffered significantly from cybercriminals who were unable to use the websites of regional telecom operators, online stores, media, financial institutions and travel companies. Hackers have crippled the IT infrastructure of many companies.
StorWall noted that attackers specifically attack telecommunications systems because most of them today do not have adequate protection to repel such threats.
Previously in Russia was recorded Increase in DDoS attacks against electronics stores.
