On International GIS Day, celebrated every third Wednesday of November, the Siberian Federal University (SFU) presented a GIS system for orientation around the campus, the university’s press service reported. This is the development of teachers of the university’s geographic information systems basic department and students of the same department.
The university said that the idea of doing a project on indoor-outdoor navigation around the campus had been planned for a long time, but became a reality this year.
The team’s application, which was submitted to the intra-university competition within the framework of the Priority 2030 program, was supported by the SFU program committee.
According to associate professor Anna Gosteva, head of the basic department of geographic information systems, the pilot project involved only 3 of the 30 buildings of the Siberian Federal University. The system is intuitive; Similar GIS systems for terrain orientation have been created using the same principle.
“It is now possible to create a continuous route from 2 to 5 points on the street and in closed areas, search for the necessary objects and change floors. There are “hot routes” – food points and the road to the university shuttle. User preferences are taken into account. If necessary, you can choose the shortest route or the route without stairs,” said Gosteva.
The associate professor explained that the developers worked on approximately 65 thousand square meters of floor plans, digitized 547 classrooms and compiled 40 km of routes.
“Once it has been tested by university students and teachers, we will be ready to finalize the system and move to other buildings and routes,” he added.
Developers believe that the system will be in demand by first-year students and university guests who come to SFU for scientific conferences, sports and youth events.
The university admits that even ancient times could not always get from point A to point B – the campus of the Siberian Federal University covers over 850 thousand square meters. metre.
In addition to 30 academic buildings, there are a congress hall, a medical center, 30 dormitories and 28 sports facilities.
The reason for going to Siberian Federal University GIS may be to change the program, look for a canteen or pharmacy.
In the future, developers plan to add unique or entertaining objects such as “squirrel feeding area”, “highest flag on campus” or “street chess tables” that will add a special atmosphere to the university’s navigation system.
