In October 2023, the number of phishing sites on RuNet increased threefold year on year. Evgeniy Pankov, information security expert and project manager of the Coordination Center (CC) for .ru/.рф domain names, told socialbites.ca.
In October, CC received 8,219 applications to block potentially dangerous domains from authorized organizations (Kaspersky Lab, Rostelecom Solar, FACCT and others – editor’s note). According to Pankov, this is a record number of requests for a month in the entire history of MK.
“This is 3.6 times more than in October last year (2,240 requests) and exceeds the number of requests in the whole of 2019 (7,456 requests). Pankov said that according to the control results in October 2023, more than 8 thousand malicious domains were isolated (blocked) in the .ru and .рф regions, and this figure increased by 3.7 times compared to the previous year.
According to their data, 90% of requests to CC were specifically related to phishing resources. Overall, the number of fraudulent sites on RuNet in October increased by 229% compared to the same period in 2022. The expert attributes this increase to Black Friday and other upcoming New Year sales.
“Online shopping before the New Year is becoming increasingly popular among Russian users, and scammers are actively trying to take advantage of this “holiday rush.”
