Kaspersky Lab experts detected more than 4 million cases of cyberattacks targeting fans of popular video games between July 2022 and July 2023. Minecraft is the most popular game among cyber crooks. says in the company report.
Therefore, Minecraft accounts for more than 70% of malware detected for PCs and more than 90% for mobile devices. This is because the game allows the use of modifications and cheats, which are often distributed on unofficial forums. Such software may contain viruses that steal or extort user data.
Roblox ranks second in terms of popularity among cybercriminals, while Counter Strike: Global Offensive comes in third.
Additionally, the report examines other types of cyber fraud, such as phishing sites that mimic the official pages of games and various platforms and invite users to enter their usernames and passwords to receive bonuses, gifts or early access to new games. After that, fraudsters gain access to user gaming accounts and can dispose of them at their discretion.
There are also sites that offer free or discounted game downloads but are actually used to steal money or data from the user’s card.
Kaspersky Lab experts recommend purchasing and downloading games only from official sources, not using pirated software and not entering your data on dubious sites.
