Iconic cybersecurity researcher Kevin Mitnick has died at the age of 60. In this respect informs The New York Times (NYT) edition cites representatives of Mitnick Security Consulting and KnowBe4, co-founded by the deceased.
Mitnick died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 59 in Las Vegas. The specialist learned of his diagnosis in 2022. Mitnick received treatment at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for the last year of his life. He will be buried in the King David Cemetery in Las Vegas.
Mitnick is known for a string of high-profile cybercrime in the ’90s. He hacked telecommunications companies and universities, stole credit card information, and also engaged in scam business. Specifically, he is accused of stealing Motorola and Nokia systems with the Santa Cruz Operations software. He became the first hacker to make it to the FBI’s Most Wanted list, and subsequently gained notoriety.
Mitnick was arrested by US intelligence agencies in 1995 and sentenced to five years in prison. After his release, he retrained as an information security specialist and became a recognized expert in the field, co-founded Mitnick Security Consulting and KnowBe4, and also held a high position at Zimperium.
