Game journalist Jeff Grubb tweeted that Japanese company Sony plans to buy the developer and publisher of video games Square Enix, known for creating the Final Fantasy series and rebooting several popular franchises like Tomb Raider and Deus Ex.
“We never have enough resources to confidently report such agreements in articles. Sony wants to buy Square Enix – such a rumor is circulating. But I can’t confirm that,” said Grubb.
Another game designer, the creator of the Metal Gear series, interviewed Hideo Kojima. Kojima also said that his studio, Kojima Productions, will not be part of Sony’s media empire, which produces the popular PlayStation series of video game consoles.
It is assumed that the rumors about the sale of Square Enix may have arisen after two studio projects, the action-adventure “Marvel’s Avengers” and “Guardians of the Marvel Galaxy”, failed to sell and brought the studio significant losses of up to $200. million.
In addition, Square Enix has already sold studios controlled by Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and the Canadian division Square Enix Montreal. While the rights of Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and Legacy of Kain games were sold together with the studios, the deal amounted to $ 300 million.
For the first time in history, a former American esports organization signed Russian team.
