Apple is working on a folding screen for the iPhone that automatically shuts down to prevent damage when the smartphone is dropped. In this respect informs The TechRadar publication refers to Apple’s corresponding application on the US Patent and Trademark Office website.
Apple’s app is titled “self-closing display device and screen protection methods using fall detection.” He describes a system that detects the moment of fall using an accelerometer or gyroscope and instructs an “electronically adjustable screen locking mechanism” to “turn off the phone.”
The document also says that the mechanism does not guarantee absolute protection, because if the fall is rapid, the smartphone will not have time to turn off. Still, Apple claims that any angle of folding the smartphone provides more protection to the screen than a 180-degree case.
In addition to the anti-shock system, the Apple patent describes a type of hinge that “divides the screen in two when folded”, thus preventing creases in the fold line. TechRadar noted that it’s hard to imagine how this system would work right now due to the document’s scant details.
