Information security experts from Group-IB discovered 66 sites on the Russian Internet about the 2022 World Cup, where Russians were deceived for money with fake prize draws. This was reported to socialbites.ca in Group-IB.
It is recorded that scammers lure users to their sites with announcements of 2022 World Cup matches. In these, visitors are offered to participate in the drawing of match tickets, free access to broadcasts, souvenirs with FIFA 2022 symbols and money. As a rule, the mechanics of drawing is the opening of “boxes” with prizes.
“The user is given three attempts to choose a box with a cash prize of between $10 and $10,000. After two unsuccessful attempts, the third always succeeds,” he told Gazeta. Group-IB Information Security Incident Response Center chief expert Ru” Gleb Martyanov.
Further, according to the classic scenario, the “winner” is asked to pay a small “commission” for the conversion – 300-500 rubles, for which he must enter the bank card details. As a result, the broadcast does not start at all, and the victim loses both money and card data.
“Criminals leave only a few sites active to avoid blocking all domains at once, while the rest are in “sleep mode.” While such resources can be launched in a matter of minutes at any time, it is quite difficult to detect and block them before they are activated,” he said.
Group-IB has discovered a total of more than 16,000 fake sources that use the FIFA 2022 World Cup theme in Qatar to steal data and money from football fans everywhere.
