Information security experts have discovered a group of 34 Russian-speaking hackers who have largely stolen passwords from crypto wallets and bank card data, as well as accounts on Steam, Roblox, Amazon and PayPal. socialbites.ca learned about this from a new report by Group-IB.
It is stated that the account theft is carried out with the help of thief programs distributed among the attackers mainly through Telegram. Of the 34 detected groups, only 10 are large – each has infected tens of thousands of devices since 2021. On average, each group has 200 participants.
Among the victims, links to the thieves are distributed mainly under the guise of video game reviews on YouTube, mining software, as well as NFT files on specialized forums. According to Group-IB, in the first seven months of 2022, through the efforts of hackers, people downloaded about 900,000 thieves, significantly more than the result of 2021.
In most cases, the targets of Russian-speaking groups are users from the USA, Brazil and India. Group-IB alleges that the stolen accounts were used to cash out their allocated funds or resell them on shady forums.
