Zenit’s Title Run: Debate Over a Goal, Triumphs, and a Possible Third Star

Krasnodar’s defender Junior Alonso voiced his view that Zenit’s second goal in the 27th round of the Russian Premier League was offside with a foul involved. The remark came through RB Sports and was picked up by other outlets as well.

Alonso argued that the sequence began with a contact against Krasnodar’s goalkeeper, insisting that the goal should not stand because it violated the rules. He suggested that Zenit could not afford a misstep in that fixture, noting that the champions, aiming to seal the title, would naturally celebrate without allowing a loss to blemish their record.

In that 27th round, Zenit, already crowned as the league leaders, finished the clash with Krasnodar in a 2-2 draw, a result that kept the title race alive on paper but underscored Zenit’s comfortable position at the summit in the closing stretch of the season.

Earlier in the season, Zenit secured the championship ahead of schedule by defeating Spartak Moscow 3-2 in the 26th round of the 2022/23 campaign. That win marked Zenit’s fifth consecutive league victory and capped a season that saw them claim their tenth national title, earning a second star for the club’s emblem as a symbol of their success.

Former Zenit midfielder Andrey Mostovoy projected that a third star would eventually appear on the club’s crest, estimating it could happen within about five years and reflecting the club’s continued ambitions and on-field achievements. [Source attribution: RB Sports]
