Former midfielder of the Russian national team Alexander Mostovoy spoke about the news that St. Petersburg club Zenit requested a review from the Expert Referee Commission, a body connected with the RFU presidency, regarding discipline for two red and white players. The names Quincy Promes and Nail Umyarov were mentioned in relation to the issue.
During the 6th round of the Russian Cup group stage, Zenit faced Spartak on November 27. The match concluded in a goalless draw and went to a penalty shootout, in which Zenit narrowly prevailed 4 to 2. Immediately after the final whistle, a large scuffle erupted on the field. The confrontation involved not only players but also substitutes and coaching staff on both sides.
Mostovoy remarked that the footage of the incident could be watched repeatedly, calling what happened on the pitch a disaster. He suggested that even a ban on several players for obscene language could be considered. He noted that Spartak could also lodge a complaint and stressed that both teams bore responsibility for the chaos. His comments were cited by a sports publication.
As a consequence of the disorder, the chief referee Vladimir Moskalev sent off three players from Zenit and three from Spartak. Zenit saw Wilmar Barrios, Rodrigao, and Malcolm as recipients of red cards, while Spartak were forced to part ways with Shamar Nicholson, Alexander Selikhov, and Alexander Sobolev.
Vyacheslav Koloskov, a former RFU honorary president, commented on the incident. He described the brawl as a significant moment in the match between Zenit and Spartak and suggested that the overall reaction could be interpreted as a sign of the sport being under intense scrutiny. The clash left a strong impression on observers and underscored the need for stricter enforcement of conduct rules in high-stakes Russian football.
