Yuri Gavrilov Hospitalized in Moscow: Latest Updates on His Condition

Former Spartak football player Lokomotiv Dynamo Yuri Gavrilov was rushed to a hospital by ambulance on May 29 in a serious condition. It was reported that he is currently in the neurological intensive care unit of a Moscow hospital, based on information circulating in social channels.
Later, the head of the Russian Football Veterans Association, former Spartak player Alexander Mirzoyan, confirmed the news in an interview with RB Sports. He noted that Gavrilov is in intensive care but declined to share further details. The veteran of Spartak added that Gavrilov could speak up if he wishes to share more.
Details were later provided by Vasily Gavrilov, the son of the renowned player. He explained that his father had already suffered a stroke while in the hospital, but the prognosis remains positive overall.
“While he was in ICU, he experienced a stroke. A plaque dislodged from an artery in his neck, cutting off about 60 percent of the blood flow”, Vasily Gavrilov told TASS. “Currently, doctors are taking the necessary steps — they will place a stent or dissolve the plaque. I believe everything will be fine, but he will stay in intensive care for several days.”
The athlete’s son cautioned that it is too early to declare the danger passed. “A thrombus in the veins is unpredictable; one moment the risk seems reduced, and the next moment complications can arise”, he added.
Spartak’s former general manager Alexander Hadzhi urged fans not to worry. He emphasized that, based on available information, Gavrilov’s recovery is progressing positively and that he is receiving high-quality medical care.
“All veterans know that Yuri Vasilievich Gavrilov is in intensive care. Everyone will do what they can to help.” Hadzhi said. “I spoke with Yuri Vasilyevich’s son yesterday; so far, there are no complications after the stroke, and he is in capable hands. I would like to visit, but visiting restrictions remain while he is in intensive care. He will be moved to a general ward when appropriate. I also had a brief personal experience recovering from a heart attack, so I understand the process.”
Fans were reassured by Hadzhi, who reminded followers that the medical team and family are closely coordinating. He added that the best wishes of Spartak fans and football supporters are appreciated and that everyone hopes for a swift and steady recovery for Gavrilov.
Spartak’s press office later confirmed that the club is ready to provide support to the veteran. Dmitry Zelenov, the head of Spartak’s press service, said the club is in touch with Gavrilov’s relatives and the hospital leadership. He promised that medical staff are handling the treatment and that the club will offer any necessary assistance.
Yuri Gavrilov has worn the jerseys of several clubs, including Dynamo Moscow and Lokomotiv, but he earned his greatest fame with Spartak Moscow. Throughout his time with the red-and-white team, he appeared in 280 matches and scored 90 goals. His contributions helped Spartak win two USSR championships, and in 1983 he finished as the league’s top scorer in the Allied championship.
